Tanner Maxwell of Goddard High School has been named the 2011 Kansas High School Journalist of the Year.

Maxwell has been editor in chief of The Lion’s Roar newspaper for the past two years, during which time the paper has received both a national Best in Show at the spring 2010 NSPA convention and a 2010 Pacemaker award at the fall 2010 NSPA convention. The Pacemaker is considered the Pulitzer Prize of high school journalism. Further, Maxwell has won awards at both the state and national level for his reporting, his illustrations and his broadcast work.

Judges noted not only Maxwell’s excellence in reporting and design, but also his courage in reporting controversial stories that stirred the Goddard community to act.

Maxwell will receive a $1,250 award from the Kansas Scholastic Press Association for this honor, and his JOY portfolio has been forwarded to the Journalism Education Association, where it will be entered in the national JEA High School Journalist of the Year competition. Maxwell is eligible for up to $5,000 at the national level. The national winner and runners-up will be announced at the annual JEA/NSPA convention in Anaheim, April 14-17.

Kansas runners-up Logan Heley and Andrew Goble, both of Shawnee Mission East, were cited by judges as strong journalists with impressive portfolios.

Riley Mortensen of Bonner Springs High School earned the Class 3A/4A Journalist of the Year award. In addition to serving as the editor of the Pow Wow, Bonner Springs’ High School newspaper, Mortensen has contributed photographs to the Wyandotte Daily News and written stories for a professional website, The Birdhouse Project. Mortensen will receive $750 from KSPA as her award.

Halee Thompson of Phillipsburg High School earned runner-up honors in Class 3A/4A.

There were no entries from students at 1A/2A schools.

Their discussion focuses primarily on educating college students, but it also ranges into professional journalism and the new media landscape defined by technology but still underpinned by traditional practices of thorough reporting and engaging writing.

The discussion underscores what we’re discussing here in Kansas regarding CTE funding: that journalism education is a central part of a good education, and that journalism isn’t a dying profession, just one that ‘s changing rapidly.

KSPA in spring 2011 will provide its first video news program All-Kansas critique and ratings service, and in advance of that, the online standards and ratings book is ready and linked here.

The standards are based on current practices of professional and student broadcast journalism sites, as well as those standards taught in reporting courses at the University of Kansas and Kansas State University.

The key areas for evaluation will be:

Coverage and Content

Writing and Editing

Continuity and On-Air Performance

Photography

Technical Quality

The rubrics contained in the guidebook should help online staffs understand how they can cover their school better by creating video news programming that speaks to the program’s primary and secondary audiences and does it in a professional manner.

An entry form for the All-Kansas video news critique and ratings service will be ready by Feb. 1, 2011, and the final deadline for entry will be March 11, 2011. The cost will be $50.

All entries are to be accompanied by between 30 and 60 minutes of programming. That range allows schools to submit whole shows or a compendium of short video clips tied together in some way. How that’s done depends on how the shows are distributed — in five-minutes chunks via daily announcements, in 30-minute blocks over cable news, or in varied format over the Internet. The key will be effective storytelling in a news format, not how the program(s) is distributed.

KSPA continues to work on reviewing its news magazine/newspaper standards and last week unveiled its website news standards. Both of those All-Kansas services have March 11, 2011, deadlines as well.
