I am so glad to hear that the journalism department at F.L. Schlagle High School is being rebuilt again. I taught journalism, including the yearbook and newspaper production classes, at Schlagle from 2002 to 2007.

When I started there, the newspaper was dead and the yearbook was dying. My students and I got both up and running again, but it was always a struggle. I stayed one year more than I had planned mainly because I did not want to see "my baby" die.

After I left, I did hear that the newspaper and yearbook (we changed to a "video yearbook" the last two years I was there due to the problems of paying for a traditional book) were not coming out anymore. It is good to hear that "my baby" has been revived (and is now someone else's baby).

I wish Keith Jones the best of luck. I empathize with him as far as how difficult it can be to get the job done, but I know he will find students there who will do it.

Sincerely,

John VanPelt
