Kansas boasts five NSPA newspaper Pacemaker finalists

Kansas again has reaped more than its share of national awards, garnering five newspaper and one broadcast Pacemaker finalist awards from the National Scholastic Press Association.

The Pacemaker is often considered the “Pulitzer Prize of scholastic journalism,” and every year Kansas outpaces other states of similar size or larger with its number of finalists. This year’s Pacemaker judging evaluated publications and broadcasts from the 2009-2010  school year.

This year’s Newspaper Pacemaker finalists include:

  • Lion’s Roar, Goddard HS
    Tanner Maxwell, editor
    Matt Deabler, adviser
  • Budget, Lawrence HS
Jon Cohen and Samantha Schwartz, editors
    Heather Lawrenz, adviser
  • The Spotlight, Blue Valley West HS
    Bethany Schulz, Kaitlin Xoiuris, editors
    Michael Dunlap, adviser
  • The Harbinger, Shawnee Mission East HS
    Tim Shedor, Phoebe Unterman, editors
    C. Dow Tate, adviser
  • The Tiger Print, Blue Valley HS
    Allison Kohn, Stephanie Roche, editors
    Jill Chittum, adviser

The lone broadcast finalist:

  • Husky Headlines, Blue Valley Northwest HS, Overland Park, Kan.

Nationally, 44 newspapers earned finalist distinction from NSPA. Texas (24.7 million population) and California (37 million) each had seven finalists, the only states that eclipsed the number from Kansas (2.8 million population).
