For the past 15 years, Julie Barker has been the adviser of the Wings yearbook and Oriole newspaper at Augusta High School, but she has been an adviser at three different schools in her 25-year teaching career. Next year, she will add broadcast to the journalism program at AHS. She also teaches 21st Century Journalism, Creative Writing, and Freshman English. Her yearbooks have won several All-Kansas awards and have been featured in Jostens Look Book. The newspaper online publication has earned Site Excellence recognition from SNOSites and stories have earned Best of SNO recognition. Her journalism students have won a multitude of KSPA state contests awards, and her newspaper Editor-in-Chief was the 2022 3A/4A Student Journalist of the Year. Julie is passionate about student-run publications, seeing students grow, and the fact that the skills students learn on a publications staff will benefit them no matter what career they choose.
