Julie Barker advises the Wings yearbook, Oriole newspaper and is building a new broadcast program at Augusta High School. She also teaches 21st Century Journalism and Creative Writing. Her yearbooks have won All-Kansas awards as well as national recognition. The online newspaper publication has earned Site Excellence recognition from SNOSites and stories have earned Best of SNO recognition. Her journalism students have won a multitude of KSPA state contest awards, and her newspaper Editor-in-Chief was the 2022 3A/4A Student Journalist of the Year. Barker is a Certified Journalism Educator and is critique training certified. Barker is passionate about student-run publications, seeing students grow, and the fact that the skills students learn on a publications staff benefit them no matter what career they choose.
