Downsizing Photos for submission

Using a Website

    • TEXT INSTRUCTIONS: Here are text instructions for downsizing photo entries for the monthly contest using a website
      1. Please use Navigate to this website
      2. for Compress Image: “75” for Compression Level 0-100
      3. for Resize Photo: “1200” for New Photo Width in Pixels
      4. for Photo to Optimize: “Choose File” from your computer or desktop
      5. Click Optimize Photo
      6. When the optimized photo appears, right-click (or control-click) on the photo and save it to your computer
      7. You will upload that optimized photo to the monthly contest form for photos.

Downsizing Photos Using Photoshop

      • TEXT INSTRUCTIONS: While these instructions are for Adobe Photoshop CS6, earlier versions of the software should be almost identical.
        1. Open your photograph inside of Photoshop
        2. Using the menu at the top, click “Image” –> “Image Size”
          1. For resolution, enter “72” with “pixels/inch”
          2. For vertical photos, enter a HEIGHT of “11” for “inches”
          3. For horizontal photos, enter a WIDTH of “11” for “inches”
          4. Click “OK”
        3. Using the menu at the top, click “File” –> “Save As”
          1. BE SURE TO CHANGE THE FILE NAME: the file name you choose doesn’t matter, but you don’t want to save over your original full resolution image.
          2. On the first screen, change the FORMAT to “JPEG”
          3. Click “OK”
          4. For the screen the says, JPG options . . .
            1. Please enter a quality of “10”
            2. For “Format Options” click on “Baseline (“Standard”)”
        4. You will upload that file to the monthly contest form for photos.

Using other software

  • Of course, you might use software on your computer, such as Photoshop, Bridge or Lightroom, to downsize your images to a manageable size. Depending on your software and version of software, these instructions will vary. So, we need to leave it to you to find a workflow that works for you.


Exporting Pages from InDesign for submission

Many different kinds of software exist for designing pages and infographics. For that reason, we will cover the most popular in this lesson. If you need assistance exporting pages from online design software or other applications, please contact your yearbook company or online tutorials. The exported pages should be saved as a pdf file of 25 MB or less. The design may be black and white or color.

Using InDesign


          1. Open your page(s) in InDesign.
          2. Select “File” –> “Export”
          3. On the next screen . . .
            1. Choose a file name for your pdf. (You can choose any file name you like.)
            2. Select a location where your files will be saved.
            3. Be sure to choose “Print PDF” unless the graphic is interactive: in that case, choose “Interactive PDF.”
            4. Click “Save”
          4. On the next screen . . .
            1. Choose “Smallest File Size” (this will ensure that your file is less than 25 MB)
            2. Be sure to only select pages that you are submitting for judging.
            3. Click “Select”
          5. Please upload that file to KSPA’s submission system for design of the month
